Fall Writes: Week 11

Last week, well… we’ll call it a rebuilding week? No one reported their goals here, but hopefully everyone had a productive week! Check out this essay by Joyce Carol Oates on how running informs her writing process. Do you use non-writing diversions to spur along your writing process? Let us know that, and your goals for the upcoming week, in the comments below!

Weekly goals:

Dan: This week takes me back to France and back to teaching, so one of my goals for this week is to get all of the grading that I’ve been putting off while I’ve been in the U.S. out of the way. I also need to get all of the cosmetic revisions of my dissertation done, as well as an overhaul of my dissertation introduction, all so that I can file by my November 27th deadline. Oh, and I have a job application done and submitted on Tuesday. Okay! And… go.

Mike: Finish draft of IREX grant proposal.

Monday – 6 poms on proposal with an eye to fill out at least 3 paragraphs concerning my research goals, previous research and my research questions. 4 poms on candidacy reading list
Tuesday: 8 poms on Proposal, 4 on reading list
Wednesday 8 poms on Proposal, 4 on reading list
Thursday: 6 poms on Proposal, 4 on reading list
Friday: Finish proposal however long it takes!!!!!!!!!

Melanie: Go back and add a bunch of stuff to chapter one, which will require some research, send some FOIA requests to the CC Sheriffs, outline AHA paper.

Evie:

– meet with content strategist to pick her brain (postponed from the week before)
– call studio manager for next Wonder and Risk article (elementary school turned artist studios turned elementary school again)
– figure out how to get archival photos of Lake City Elementary for next Wonder and Risk article
– celebrate release of Issue #1!

  1. Most of last week was spent working on a paper (that I finished!) for my advisor on Friday. I was in a holding patter for my dissertation proposal since my advisors went to war over its direction (and my preference won!). But now that that’s resolved I have to make good progress on that (mid-term goal – draft by the middle of december). My next grant is due on the 25th of November (IREX) and I’m looking to have a draft of that done by the end of this week. Most of my work today will be spent on storyboarding it out and I’d like to start writing it tomorrow. So here are my goals:
Monday – 6 poms on proposal with an eye to fill out at least 3 paragraphs concerning my research goals, previous research and my research questions. 4 poms on candidacy reading list
Tuesday: 8 poms on Proposal, 4 on reading list
Wednesday 8 poms on Proposal, 4 on reading list
Thursday: 6 poms on Proposal, 4 on reading list
Friday: Finish proposal however long it takes!!!!!!!!!

  2. I went AWOL as I went deeper and deeper into fellowship application minutia. I was surprised by the way it took over my entire work schedule. I submitted one last week and should be submitting the other tomorrow, but the work is all done. I am glad to be getting back to the dissertation! My goal for this week is to go back and add a bunch of stuff to chapter one, which will require some research. I also need to send some FOIA requests to the CC Sheriffs. I need to outline my AHA paper because that’s not coming up fast or anything…

I am not a huge Ted person but I think this video is really good for writers. Recently, I struggled with a personal statement for a fellowship application that asked for my personal statement to really be personal. I found it kind of threatening to have to actually own the reasons I do what I do, and the narrative that got me to where I am (I actually found myself saying “no more really personal personal statements!”). I also found myself dreading the imminent rejection, and fearing being too hopeful. I’s easy for me to forget that constantly putting myself out there is actually an emotionally useful thing, not to mention good for my work in incalculable ways.

  3. I finished up a 250-page proposal for work last week. Ugh. It took up most of my week and prior weekend, unfortunately. Here’s what I’m doing this week:
    – meet with content strategist to pick her brain (postponed from the week before)
    – call studio manager for next Wonder and Risk article (elementary school turned artist studios turned elementary school again)
    – figure out how to get archival photos of Lake City Elementary for next Wonder and Risk article
    – celebrate release of Issue #1!
