Fall Writes: Week 8

I have been quite delinquent in my duties as writing group moderator, failing to do a wrap up post for week 7, so I’m just going to make this the main post for week 8. It’s the middle of the semester–ENOUGH SAID. In any case, I may follow this once-a-week format for the remainder of the group. So, let us know how you did last week and what you hope to accomplish in the week to come. And if you’re looking for inspiration and insight into the creative process, check out this post from Profhacker, rounding up some recent work on how writers write.

Weekly Goals:

Mike: Make good progress on IREX grant.
Monday: Prep for talk tomorrow 8 poms
Tuesday: Give talk and make some time for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!
Wednesday: 6 poms on grant/dissertation proposal, 4 on candidacy readings
Thursday: 6 poms on grant/dissertation proposal, 4 on candidacy readings
Friday: 6 poms on grant/dissertation proposal, 4 on candidacy readings
Saturday: 6 poms on grant/dissertation proposal, 2 on candidacy readings
Sunday: 6 poms on grant/dissertation proposal, 2 on candidacy reading

Carly: Send conference paper and abstract in no later than Friday, create presentation to go with it. Draft Strategic Visions piece. Get bodies in the room for next Tuesday’s CENFAD talk, and also make the poster for the following talk, November 12. Decide if applying for a grant or not.

Dan: Submit job application, prepare for dissertation defense in ONE WEEK.

UPDATE: Watching that video sent me on a late 90s video watching spree that ended in this Tumblr post. So, you know, off to a great start.

  1. Goal for the week
Overall goal – make some good progress on IREX grant. I’ll have to do some fairly significant reworking of my grant proposal since my advisor and co-advisor had a bit of a talking to about my dissertation and my co-advisor ‘won’ and so my project is going to be more ethnographic and micro and nature than it had been previously. This is a good reworking though, so yay for that! I’d like to get a revised draft of the proposal out by sometime this coming week.

  2. I am less that two weeks out from my wedding, so I have just a handful of school things I hope to accomplish before then (with a strong preference to get them done this week rather than next week when I’ll be juggling wedding stuff with more human stuff like trying to celebrate Dan!) I need to send a conference paper in no later than Friday (and I am creating a presentation to go with it), as well as an abstract. I need to draft a piece for Strategic Visions. And I need to do my best to get bodies in the room for next Tuesday’s CENFAD talk, and also make the poster for the following talk, November 12 (which is an easier sell.) I also need to decide if I’m applying for a grant or not. Waffling.

Dan, we are doing our best to maintain some beautiful weather for you here. See you soon! A bientot!

  3. Ugh I fell off the bandwagon big time. Vacation and crazy work deadlines are my crappy excuses.
    Goals for the week:
    – Attend editing conference in Bothell this weekend
    – Photograph and write draft of new article for Wonder and Risk
