Week 5 Wrap Up

This week, Sinead O’Connor wrote an open letter to Miley Cyrus. How about you?

Meanwhile, the US government is still shut down, but our work continues apace! Let us know in the comments how you did this week, and what you plan to do in the week to come. And, as always, happy writing!

    • Stalled?! From your posts in the #graftonline Facebook group, it sounds like you’ve been killing it! Also, nothing like printing everything off, cutting up the pages, and rearranging them on the floor. When I did that with chapter four back in August, my boyfriend thought the stress of dissertating had finally gotten to me.

  1. I did okay with my goals last week, but was far from stellar. I started off strong, logging 14 poms on Sunday and 10 on Monday as I pulled together a major round of job and fellowship applications. After that, I predictably crashed on Tuesday, and felt tired, anxious, and empty all at the same time. (What is it with academics having all of the feelz?) During the middle of the week I didn’t log many poms–which doesn’t mean I didn’t work, I just didn’t have the timer going–and then rallied yesterday to pull off 9 poms, on top of the longest run I’ve done in quite a while. I still don’t have comments on my full draft from my advisor, which makes me wonder if I should be plugging away at revisions on my own. I’ll admit that I’m a little bit scared to go back to it without defined points of entry, but it’s not as though I don’t have other things to take care of. So this week, I’ll repeat my time goals of 8 poms a day, including 2 of Rosetta Stone, except on Saturday, because my mom is coming to visit over the weekend. I’m also taking an online course on R to burnish my DH credentials and gain programming some skills that will let me do cool stuff with some public health data I collected during my research, so I want to finish the second problem set for that as well. And… that’s probably enough for now.

  2. Did pretty good last week. Had a really strong push over the weekend (12, 14 poms respectively) to knock out the grant revision. Then I used the middle of the week to catch up on some teaching and did 4 Poms on Thursday to make a good push for a paper that I had to finish for today. I’m the head of an organizing committee that has a colloquium to organize this weekend and so I caught up on that on Saturday and will be occupied with that from the middle of the week on. But in the meantime I am hoping to make some progress on a SRAS paper (School of Russian and Asian Studies) that I was supposed to have finished by October, but they’ve given me an extension until the end of the month. So I am going to take them up on that!
This week though I would like to make some good progress on it though and am hoping to have a draft done by the middle of next week that I can revise for the end of the following week. So my goal is to knock out 4 poms on it today and tomorrow, but I might not be able to touch it until the beginning of this coming week.
I also really need to make some good progress on my reading lists and my dissertation proposal as well. That’s another reason why I really need to finish this SRAS paper. Let’s get a move on it Mike!!!!
